5 points to excel yourself – by Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

screen-shot-2016-12-24-at-12-37-55-pm  India’s ex-president Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, (15.10.1931-27.08.2015) was a notable scientist, a great philosopher, and more than that, a great teacher.  His inspiring speeches had spread across the world.  We love to say – Missile Man we are proud of you.

Be a great leader:

He shared his personal incident to explain this.

It was 1979, in Sriharikota, SLV-3 launch program, Dr. APJ was the Mission Director.  His mission was to put the satellite in the orbit.  In that project, thousands of people were working for almost 10 years.  During the launch he was there, time counting going on, and in the last moment the Computer put it on a hold – It said, not to launch.

Being the mission director he had to take a call, where few experts were standing behind and suggesting not to launch, because there was a problem.  But he took a decision to launch bypassing the computer.  Finally, that decision went wrong and put the SLV-3 into the bay of bengal instead of putting the rocket into the desired orbit.

Dr. APJ was scared because of his wrong decision.  At that time Prof. Satish Dhawan, Chairman of ISRO, came and called him for a press conference, where he said – “Gentlemen we have failed this time.  It is a failure of mine, but I assure you in the next year we will succeed.  We have a very good team of technologists and experts and support staffs.”  Lot of criticism were there, but he took everything on his shoulder though it was Dr. APJ’s fault.

Next year, July 18, 1980; they succeeded to launch SLV-3, and Dr. Dhawan asked Dr. APJ to conduct the press conference.

Quality of a great leader – When the failure occur a leader takes it up on himself.  When the success come a leader passes it to his team.

Stand for the culture of excellence:

Excellence is not an accident.  It is a process where an individual continuously strives to better oneself.  They set their performance standards.  Because they work on their dreams with focus.  They are ready to take calculated risks and do not get deterred by failures.  Then they step up their dreams to reach their original targets.  They strive to increase their potential.  In the process they increase their standards.  So, this is an unending phenomenon of culture of excellence.  Needless to have any competition with others except themselves, the beauty of culture of excellence.  Those who aspire to excel in life, this is the way.

Have an inspired Mind:

Here APJ told a story of Sir C V Raman.  Sir Raman was traveling from London to Calcutta in 1930 by ship.  When he reached Calcutta it was evening.  He looked at the sea water – it was blue water, blue horizon, and the blue sky too.  It came into his mind – why the horizon is blue, the sky too, and the sea water?

He worked hard on this for two years, and received Nobel for the same.  Because he discovered it was the backscattering of the light, which is called Raman Effect.

Dr. Kalam also mentioned Srinivasa RamanujanMarie CurieThomas EdisonAlexander Graham Bell as an inspired mind.  All of them had walked into an unexplored path and created history for the mankind.  They all had a creative mind, and the outcome was invention and discovery.

Fight to be you:

Every youth wants to be unique, but the world work hard to make you like Everybody Else.  Whether you want to be Everybody Else or You, a million dollar question.  To be like Everybody Else is convenient.  But in the long run it is not satisfying. Therefore the challenge is to fight a battle, which any human being can ever imagine until you reach your destination -The unique You!

It reminds us a sloka of Katha Upanishad – Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.

Four pillars to achieve Unique You:

  • Set the goal
  • Acquire the knowledge continuously
  • Hard work with devotion
  • Perseverance

Inspire others:

In European Parliament Dr. APJ said:  “Where there is righteousness in heart, there is a beauty in the character.  When there is beauty in the character, there is a harmony in the home.  Where there is harmony in the home, there is an order in the Nation.  When there is order in the Nation, there is peace in the World.
